Portuguese Saddlery & Costume

To understand Portugal’s equestrian heritage, one must look beyond the horse itself.

For centuries, Portuguese saddlers, leatherworkers, embroiderers, silversmiths, and tailors have helped shape one of the world’s most distinctive riding cultures. Every saddle, jacket, hat, spur, buckle, and piece of tack tells a story — not only of craftsmanship, but of the people, landscapes, and traditions from which they emerged.

These traditions were never created for display. They evolved through daily life, cattle work, classical horsemanship, pilgrimage, celebration, and the enduring partnership between horse and rider.

Today, many of these skills continue to be practised by dedicated artisans who preserve techniques passed from one generation to the next. Their work represents a living heritage that remains as relevant and inspiring today as it was centuries ago.

In this collection, we explore the stories, makers, traditions, and craftsmanship that continue to define Portugal’s rich equestrian culture.
