Juncal da Caniceira has just completed an extraordinary chapter in his career, representing Canada at the 2026 WAWE World Championships in Jerez.

His story is particularly compelling because he was not purchased as a ready-made international horse. His owner, Ilona, was beginning her journey in Working Equitation when she bought Juncal as her competition partner and set herself an ambitious goal: to progress through the sport and ultimately represent Canada.

Together they progressed from regional competition through Debutantes and Consagrados to International Masters, qualifying for the World Championships in their first international Masters competition in Jerez in 2025.

In September 2026, that goal became reality.

Powerful, athletic, intelligent and charismatic, Juncal combines the traditional qualities of the Lusitano with the speed, courage and versatility required for modern Working Equitation.
